Atom annotations

Is it possible to apply text annotations to atoms and view these?

Not currently, though this functionality is in 3Dmol.js so it would be possible to add.

is there at least a way to manually add an annotation on/near an atom, for now?
we just want to annotate a few atoms with a "!" to "mark" them.

Not currently, no. It's possible to add but I am unlikely to have the time soon.
