“Drawn” Format Option for Text Fields

Feature Request: Handwritten / Drawn-Only Input for Text Fields

Summary

Add the ability to restrict Text Fields to handwritten/drawn input, similar to the existing Signature Field → Format options.

Background

Signature fields already support a Format dropdown:

• Any
• Drawn
• Typed
• Drawn or Typed
• Drawn or Upload
• Upload

This is excellent UX and solves real workflow constraints.

Text fields currently do not offer input restrictions.

Problem

Some workflows require non-typed input, for example:

• Handwritten statements
• Drawn diagrams/sketches
• Handwritten acknowledgments
• Compliance / fraud-reduction scenarios

Today this cannot be enforced because text fields always allow typing.

Proposed Solution (UX-consistent)

Option A — Add Format Dropdown to Text Fields (preferred)

Text Field → Format:

• Any
• Typed
• Drawn / Handwritten
• Typed or Drawn
• (Optional) Drawn or Upload
• (Optional) Upload

Behavior:

• "Drawn / Handwritten" disables keyboard entry
• Opens drawing canvas (reuse signature draw logic)
• Saves strokes/vector data

Option B — New Field Type

Field Type → Drawing / Handwriting

Capabilities:

• Freehand drawing/writing
• Stylus / touch / mouse support

Expected Behavior

• User draws/writes within field boundary
• Field validates as completed
• PDF export renders drawing cleanly
• Cross-device compatibility

✅ Reduces misuse of typed fields

This would significantly expand Docuseal’s usefulness in legal, insurance, and field documentation workflows.
