Worse, the example given here is for single facet value only - https://www.algolia.com/doc/api-reference/widgets/refinement-list/react

In my own code it won't work with one value or with multiples, in array or comma delimited string. It just doesn't work.

At the very least, it would be helpful for the documentation to be updated with a multiple facet value example.

Ok, my router needs adjusting. I'm going to guess it's at fault, I'll update this post once I know for sure.

Yes, my router was definitely the problem. The facet moved off the uiState..menu to uiState..refinementList
