After automatically switching to the new video tab, the page freezes

The page doesn't freeze, it just doesn't finish loading. YouTube stopped removing has-loading-content and continuation-is-reloading from ytd-rich-grid-renderer. It also affects any button, not just "New to you."

I tried a different selector, PointerEvent, and MouseEvent, but YouTube no longer treats any of these as a real user click. I don't have a fix at the moment and can't say when or if this will be restored.
